Mandarin

Nihao, today in room 13 we were lucky enough to have Mr Gu come in and teach us about how to use the calligraphy style brushes from China to write different characters in Mandarin.
We first had to get use to holding the paint brushes, which we had to hold differently than we hold our pens and pencils. Then we practiced writing our characters with water to figure out how to use the brushes and finally we moved onto using ink!

Thank you so much for coming in and sharing your knowledge with us Mr Gu!

Fijian Fiafia group

Kia Ora everyone,
This is a video of Jodie Smith doing the dance for the Fijian group (both girls and boys dance) for Fiafia night next week.

If your child is in the Fijian group could you please encourage them to watch this at home and practice it as much as possible to help ensure that they are confident when on stage next week. This link should open straight into Google photos for you, please do let me know if the link doesn't work for you and your child and I will try to solve this for you.

Thank you so much for all of your support during this busy time leading up to Fiafia. It will be a great event next week and I can't wait to see you all there to support our Holy Cross whanau.

R.E

This term in R.E we have been looking at the sacrament strand and today some of the students bought in items from home that show them the presence of God in their lives. As a class we talked about the different ways that God presents Himself to us, and how these aren't always big and obvious messages sometimes they are small and quietly spoken so that only we can hear them.

Some students bought in Rosary beads members of their family had bought them, some bought in books that offered them prayers or taught them about the different Saints and some bought in items that when they hold them it reminds them of God's embrace and some even bought in photos of Jesus from their home that reminds them of Jesus always being there and God watching over us all.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11

Our naked egg experiment!

This term in Room 13 we are focusing on science and the material world - looking into the changes different objects go through when combined or mixed with something else. These past couple of weeks we have been creating naked eggs!
We placed regular raw eggs into vinegar and let them soak over night and then after 24 hours we observed the changes that had occurred and changed the vinegar! (the eggs was starting to feel really slimy). We then left the egg to sit in the vinegar for another 48 hours and when we came back to them the shells had dissolved and the membrane around the outside of the egg was still there so we could see inside of it! We had a play with the eggs and found out they had become bouncy and didn't break if we were careful with them, we then let them soak in water for about a week! When we took them out the water we found that they had absorbed some of the water and were even bigger than when we started! We then had some fun playing with the eggs and seeing how high we could drop them from before they broke!

Making our own ice cream!!

This term we are looking at the material world in science and the changes that different things go through if we add and combine different ingredients!
Each afternoon we have gone to a different class and worked on different science experiments; we made quick sand and slime, we made balloons expand by mixing baking soda and vinegar as well as exploding bottles of coke with mentos and we even made our own ice cream!

These experiments have really made us think about the different reactions that occur in experiments and have ignited our interest in science that will continue to grow this term.

Fun run

Kia Ora everyone!
We have had a very exciting start to Term 2 in Room 13. One thing we have been focusing on is improving our fitness by practicing for our cross country fun run each day! The fun run is a way for us to improve our fitness and keep healthy but also to raise money for Holy Cross Catholic School. All children who raise over $10 are able to choose a prize once all the donations have been collected. Even if your child can be sponsored $2 by each family member this can go a long way to helping our school!

Our fun run event will be held on Wednesday 16th May - but donations can still be taken for a while after this!

Thank you for all your support that you provide your child!

Cross country

Morena!
Starting Term 2, the Tasman Syndicate are doing Cross Country as part of the P.E programme. Your child needs to bring their PE gear and suitable lace up shoes for running/jogging as their school shoes are not appropriate.

Your child will also be able to set themselves a goal of how many laps they want to be able to complete by the end of the 3 weeks. So please encourage them to keep their fitness up and over the holidays talk to them about the importance of keeping fit and healthy!

My cross country goal is to do …………………………………..laps
